Good electrical work starts with a clear agreement about the job. A neat socket front is not evidence that the wiring behind it has been designed, installed and tested correctly. Choosing a suitable electrician and understanding the handover are more useful than trying to judge hidden work yourself.
This guide helps you ask informed questions before and after a project, whether you are changing a consumer unit or renovating a whole property.
Check credentials against the work you need
Ask about the electrician's registration, relevant experience and the type of work they undertake. You can use the appropriate registration body's directory to verify a business rather than relying only on a logo in an advert.
Registration for one activity does not automatically establish competence for every specialist system. Explain the actual project and ask who will carry out the work, testing and any specialist commissioning.
Compare the scope, not just the total
A useful quotation makes the job understandable. It should identify the work included, significant exclusions and any assumptions that might change the price once the installation is inspected.
- Which circuits, rooms and accessories are included?
- Are fittings supplied by you or the electrician?
- Who will repair disturbed plaster or decoration?
- What testing and documentation will be provided?
- How will any additional work be agreed?
An inexpensive quote that omits essential work may not be comparable with a more complete proposal. Ask for clarification before making a decision.
Discuss building control and certification early
Some electrical work in England is notifiable under Building Regulations. The route for compliance and the relevant electrical certificates should be discussed before work begins. Building control notification and an electrical installation certificate serve different purposes; do not treat one as a substitute for the other.
The documents appropriate to a small alteration may differ from those for a new installation. Ask the electrician to explain what you will receive for your particular job.
At handover, ask for a practical explanation
Check that the agreed positions and fittings match the scope. Ask how to operate new controls, where relevant instructions are kept and how circuits are identified. Raise visible damage, missing items or unexpected changes before the project is closed out.
Do not remove covers to inspect workmanship yourself. Concerns about safety or an existing installation require a competent person's assessment and, where appropriate, testing.
Keep a property record
Store certificates, invoices, product manuals and any building control confirmation together. They can help with future work and property transactions, though they do not eliminate the need to investigate a new fault.
