The right lighting depends on what happens in a room. A comfortable bedroom and a practical kitchen do not need the same scheme, even when the fittings share a style. Start with activities and controls, then choose the appearance of the lights.

A good plan also considers daylight, wall finishes and furniture. A fitting that works in a showroom may behave differently above your desk or beside a dark wall.

Kitchens: light the work, not just the floor

Identify the areas used for preparing food, washing up and reading appliance controls. A ceiling light behind you can leave your hands and worktop in shadow. Discuss task lighting that reaches the surface without reflecting unpleasantly from polished finishes.

Pendant lights over an island may be attractive, but their position should match how the island is used. Keep the kitchen plan, extraction arrangement and electrical layout coordinated before ordering fittings.

Living rooms: allow different uses

Reading, conversation and television benefit from flexible lighting. A local reading lamp and gentler background lighting may be more useful than one bright ceiling light for every activity.

Sit in the usual seats when considering glare and reflections. Think about where switches can be reached and whether dimming is appropriate. Compatibility needs checking before selecting lamps, drivers and controls.

Bedrooms: make controls convenient

Consider the route from the doorway to the bed, bedside reading and getting dressed. A light that looks balanced on a floor plan may be blocked by a wardrobe or shine directly into the eyes of someone lying down.

Agree furniture positions early. Bedside switching and socket positions are easier to plan before decoration than after a new bed and fitted storage are installed.

Bathrooms: check the actual location

Bathrooms require particular care because of water, equipment location and the electrical installation. Explain where you need light, then have the electrician specify suitable fittings and protection.

Do not buy a fitting solely because a retailer calls it “bathroom lighting”. Suitability depends on the actual position and manufacturer's requirements. Coordinate with the shower, bath, mirror and ventilation layout.

Workspaces and hallways: prioritise visibility

A desk needs useful light without screen glare. A hallway or staircase needs clear visibility along the route and accessible controls. Decorative fittings should not create dark patches or obstruct movement.

List each room, its activities, existing problems and preferred controls. Add photographs and the furniture layout. If the budget is limited, identify where change would make the biggest difference.
