Ordering an electric oven and arranging its electrical connection are related but separate jobs. A new model may fit the cabinet while needing a different connection or supply arrangement. Checking both before delivery can avoid an appliance sitting unused in the kitchen.

Start with the exact model

Send the electrician the manufacturer's model number and installation instructions. “Single oven” or “double oven” is not enough to establish the electrical requirements. The appliance's rated load, connection method and installation instructions matter.

Do not assume a plug fitted to an old appliance makes the same connection suitable for its replacement. Nor should a plug be added to an appliance simply because a nearby socket is convenient. The installer needs to assess the manufacturer's requirements and existing circuit.

Check the cabinet and ventilation requirements

Compare the required opening with the actual cabinet, including depth and the space behind the appliance. Note the position of drawers, gas pipework, worktops and adjacent equipment. Manufacturer clearances and ventilation instructions need to be followed.

If a kitchen fitter is involved, agree who checks the furniture and who carries out the electrical work. An electrical installation appointment does not necessarily include cabinet alterations or removing a worktop.

Have the existing supply assessed

Tell the electrician whether there is a separate cooker switch, whether other cooking equipment shares the area and whether the old oven had faults. Do not remove a socket, switch or cover to take photographs.

A suitable assessment considers the existing wiring and protection, not just the appearance of the connection point. If additional work is needed, agree it before the delivery date rather than expecting an installer to improvise around an unsuitable supply.

Make the appointment straightforward

  • Keep the manufacturer's instructions and order confirmation available.
  • Confirm who disconnects and removes the old appliance.
  • Arrange clear access through the property and around the cabinet.
  • Agree whether packaging and the old oven are taken away.
  • Ask what happens if the delivered model differs from the one quoted.

Tell the installer about stairs, restricted parking or a tenant's access arrangements when booking. These practical details can affect how the visit is organised.

What should happen at handover?

The installer should complete the appropriate checks and explain the connection and controls relevant to the work. Ask what documentation is supplied and retain the appliance manual for future maintenance. An appliance warranty and electrical installation paperwork cover different things.

If there is a burning smell, visible damage or repeated tripping after installation, stop using the appliance and seek advice rather than trying it repeatedly.

For an oven replacement or a wider kitchen update, contact Westwood about appliance installation and testing. Provide the model, postcode and delivery timing so we can discuss the right next step.
