No electrical installation can be guaranteed to suit every future technology. What you can do during building work is make sensible decisions about access, routes and the needs you can already anticipate.

Start with credible plans: a home office, an electric vehicle, a garden building or a different kitchen layout. These are more useful to an electrician than a request to make the house future-proof without defining what that means.

Make the socket layout match the rooms

Consider furniture positions, work surfaces and where everyday equipment will be used. A room can have several sockets and still depend on extension leads if they are all in inconvenient places.

Discuss the proposed equipment as well as the accessory count. Additional sockets do not, by themselves, establish that a circuit can supply any amount of equipment.

Coordinate power and connectivity

Home working, media systems and connected controls may need both electricity and dependable connectivity. Explain where these functions will be used and ask the relevant installers to coordinate their routes and access needs.

Wireless products can be convenient, but they do not remove every infrastructure requirement. Equally, installing cabling without a plan for its purpose and termination can create unused complexity.

Discuss likely larger loads early

An EV charger, electric heating or other significant equipment may require an assessment of the installation and supply. Tell the electrician about these plans while access is available, even if the equipment will be fitted later.

Any preparatory work should have a clear scope. Final selection and installation still need to be assessed against the actual equipment and requirements at that time.

Preserve useful access where appropriate

Ask whether sensible routes or accessible spaces can be retained for later work. Coordinate this with structural, fire-safety and building-fabric requirements rather than assuming any convenient void can be used.

Document what has been installed. Clear records can be more useful to a future contractor than vague memories of a cable somewhere behind a wall.

Avoid locking the home into unnecessary complexity

For connected equipment, consider manual operation, manufacturer support and what happens when accounts or services change. A straightforward system with understandable controls may age better than one dependent on a collection of unsupported products.

Keep manuals, configuration information and installation documentation together, and transfer the relevant information if the property changes occupants.

Build a phased brief

List what is needed now, what is reasonably likely and what is only a possibility. Ask the electrician to distinguish essential work from optional preparation and explain the value of each item.
